Shaking Up Productivity - Machine Upgrade Yields Many Benefits

Many efficiency experts suggest that managers should focus on the small improvements in their process that will yield the greatest return on investment. This advice seems directly targeted at the challenges faced by many block and paver producers. Smart plant managers know that continually improving processes is key to securing their competitive edge. When considering these incremental improvements, managers review many factors. Their considerations often include how the upgrade will impact existing process controls, increase operational efficiency, positively enhance plant safety, reduce plant downtime, decrease routine maintenance and of course, improve product quality. In late 2013, Besser launched revolutionary upgrades for cam operated concrete products machines, this patent-pending technology is named “Advanced Servo Vibration (ASV) and Servo Main Drive (SMD)." These two upgrades allow producers operating cam machines to reap the benefits of the latest Servo technology without the major capital investment related to installing a new machine. Producers around the world operating ASV and SMD equipped cam machines are extremely pleased, citing improved mold wear, reduced maintenance costs and higher cycle rates as the primary benefits delivered by the upgrade. ASV and SMD, through the use of Servo motors, smooth out the machine cycle. Smoothing out the machine cycle results in the production of higher quality concrete products and extends the life of machine and mold parts. ASV allows the machine operator to precisely match vibration frequency and amplitude to the product being produced for optimum efficiency, product density and aesthetics. Plus, by synchronizing and accurately controlling the movement of the vibrator shafts, the life of mold parts is increased by 30% or more. The SMD upgrade replaces the block machine’s original mechanical clutch and brake with a completely electronic operation. The Servo precisely controls the acceleration and deceleration of the machine’s bull gear which maximizes the life of machine parts by reducing the force to the machine components. An additional benefit of installing the Servo motor on the main drive is the power it creates during deceleration. This power is sent to the main electrical panels for use by either the main drive during acceleration or by the ASV.
